THE GORGON LNG PROJECT

One of the world’s largest natural gas projects

The Gorgon Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project is the single biggest resource project in Australia. It is currently being developed by Australian subsidiaries of international energy companies Chevron (50% and operator), Shell (25%) and ExxonMobil (25%).

The Greater Gorgon gas fields, referring to a grouping of several gas fields, contain more than 40 trillion cubic feet of gas, enough to supply 8% of the worlds LNG over the nominal 60 year projected life of the project.

Location:

The Gorgon gas field, discovered in 1981, is located at water depths of 200 m about 130 km off the Pilbara coast of Western Australia approximately 60 km northwest of Barrow Island (see map). Several other gas fields have subsequently been discovered in deeper water to the north adding significantly to the total amount of gas to be exploited. Initial development will include the Jansz-Io field, discovered in 2000, which covers an area of 2,000 km2 at water depths of up to 1,300 m. The Jansz-Io field contains nearly 20 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas reserves.
