The position provides ongoing, direct liaison and support to the next of kin and significant family members of deceased or seriously injured workers in matters under investigation by the Investigations Branch.

The role requires engaging with individuals experiencing acute trauma, grief, and distress following sudden and unexpected loss.

You will be responsible for maintaining sensitive, compassionate, and professional communication while supporting families through complex investigative and legal processes.

The role involves exposure to confronting material and emotionally challenging situations, requiring strong personal resilience, emotional intelligence, and effective coping strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Next‑of‑kin communication — Notify and update families on investigation and prosecution progress in a timely, accurate, and sensitive manner, in line with legal and departmental requirements.
  • Information management — Provide information appropriately while complying with confidentiality obligations and restrictions on official information release.
  • Stakeholder liaison — Facilitate contact between families and senior officers, including the Commissioner, Director Investigations, and Prosecutors.
  • Sensitive communication — Communicate professionally and compassionately in emotionally charged and politically sensitive environments.
  • Support referrals — Connect families with counselling and other support services.
  • Event attendance — Attend relevant events to support family members when required.
  • Interagency collaboration — Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including the Coroner and external agencies.
  • Case management — Maintain accurate records of all contact with next of kin and other stakeholders.
  • Reporting — Prepare reports and correspondence relating to cases and critical incidents.
  • Team contribution — Support a positive team culture and contribute actively to the working environment.
  • Policy development — Develop and implement policies, procedures, and continuous improvement strategies for family liaison services.
  • Resource management — Assess and improve documentary and online resources for next of kin.
  • Representation — Represent the department on committees, working groups, and forums.
  • Complaint handling — Manage complaints professionally and in line with departmental policy.
  • Travel requirements — Undertake occasional travel, remote work, and after‑hours duties as required.


Role Specific Requirements

  • Trauma‑informed support experience — Demonstrated experience supporting individuals experiencing trauma, grief, or acute distress.
  • Analytical capability — Ability to analyse information objectively, identify interconnected issues, and resolve problems effectively.
  • Independent and ethical practice — Proven ability to work autonomously while upholding strong ethical standards and integrity.
  • Advanced communication skills — Highly effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication with strong self‑awareness and empathy.
  • Relevant qualifications — Qualifications in psychology or a related discipline are desirable.
  • Investigative process knowledge — Understanding of investigative processes within the criminal jurisdiction is advantageous.
